I lost my original USB cable for my ipod, I got a Belkin model but it wont work on my computer. help? - belkin usb cable

I connected my computer and keeps saying it is a device does not work and do not recognize the computer. That did not come with the software, so I do not know if I just get a faulty cable and must be re-taken or if it's just user error.
